Revenge of the Mummy at Universal Studios Hollywood
Basic Overview
Average Wait Time: 20 minutes Hidden in the lower lot of Universal Studios Hollywood lies a terror beckoning to be awakened. But beware! By embarking upon this perilous journey you risk the curse that lies parallel to you tracks. Built across from Jurassic Park: The Ride, The Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride doesn’t look very stunning. But this is due to the fact that the ride is completely indoors. The line begins outside with some mild temple theming and lockers where you can stow loose articles for free for up to 2 hours. Upon entering the building you are transported back in time into the tunnel of an ancient pyramid. Markings appear on the wall here and there, but it is the interactive scenery that keeps it interesting. Along the way there is a hole that you may reach into, but watch out for the creature that moves inside. You may also come across the Black Book that activates the wrath of an unknown force when touched. You soon enter a medium sized room featuring a screen that houses unnamed woman trying to ward you away babbling about some curse. But fear not, for straight ahead lies the station where you will embark upon this perilous plunge into doom! The vehicles of doom consist of 4 rows of 5 seats where you are quickly seated and before you know it the restraints come down over your legs and your off. It begins with a left and then right turn through a small tunnel, where you see a man above your path telling you the curse actually is real! But it is a bit late for that, for when you enter the next room you are met by Imhotep, the mummy brought back from the dead in the movies. Taking a quick turn right you enter a dark tunnel and suddenly you are launched forward into the darkness. The track leads you into a large room where the vehicle takes quick dives, twists, and turns. It is impossible to document the exact route for one is too busy watching the spirits that fly close, only emphasized by strobe lights. After about 20 seconds of intense confusion you are led into a dead end where the vehicle takes a sudden halt. Safe for now? No. Scarab beetles begin emerging from the walls and ceiling, and if you haven’t seen the movie, you don’t want to mess with these. Unexpectedly you are launched backwards onto another track where there are more sharp turns and dips like the beginning but backwards! Too soon you are halted in a small circular room where Imhotep appears on the dome shaped ceiling with fire and doom circling around. Luckily the whole track begins turning you around so that you face forward again, but only leads you back into the station. It seems that you have escaped the curse for now, but do you dare try again?
Pros: Great theming, fun yet intense ride for all ages, interactivity in queue line This ride was definitely my favorite at Universal Studios Hollywood and is a must if you go there. It is located in the lower lot directly to the right of the “Starway” escalators. The theming is incredible and very much resembles a pyramid. Watch out for the restraints if you are tall or have any items (cameras, etc.) with you on the ride because they are not very comfortable. It’s a face paced intense ride that combines some features of our favorite coasters into one and goes old school with the track rotation and going backwards. It’s on my top ten!
